New Anticoagulants to Displace or Reshape Anticoagulation Clinics

Article by Edith A. Nutescu, Pharm.D.
Summary by Henry I. Bussey, Pharm.D., FCCP, FAHA
April 2004

Review: Nutescu, E.A. The Future of Anticoagulation Clinics. Journal of Thrombosis and Thrombolysis 2003; 16(1-2):61-63(3).

In a recently published paper, Dr. Edith Nutescu of the University of Illinois reviews the probable future of anticoagulation clinics based on the premise that newer anticoagulants, such as the direct thrombin inhibitor, ximelagatran - brand name Exanta, will replace warfarin (brand name Coumadin). These newer agents appear not to require the frequent laboratory monitoring that is required for warfarin. Consequently, Dr. Nutescu predicts that those anticoagulation clinics that survive into the future will need to become "Comprehensive Antithrombosis Centers (CAC)". She further suggests that these centers "... will most likely manage patients with thrombotic disorders treated with a range of anticoagulant therapies".
