Low Molecular Weight Heparin Use Following Prosthetic Valve Surgery Reduces Cost and Length of Stay Ann K. Comparison of efficacy, safety, and cost of low-molecular-weight heparin with continuous-infusion unfractionated heparin for initiation of anticoagulation after mechanical prosthetic valve implantation. The American Journal of Cardiology 2004;93:247-250. A recent study published in The American Journal of Cardiology is a retrospective cost analysis of post-operative anticoagulation in 63 patients undergoing valve replacement surgery. Compared to unfractionated heparin, post operative low molecular weight heparin therapy was associated with significantly lower post-operative costs, primarily attributed to reduced length of stay.
