Medication Errors in Cardiovascular & Stroke Patients

Henry I. Bussey, Pharm.D., FCCP, FAHA
June, 2010

Recently ClotCare editorial board member Sarah Spinler, Pharm.D. co-authored a publication on medication errors in acture cardiovascular and stroke patients. The complete 20-page publication is available at http://circ.ahajournals.org/cgi/content/full/121/14/1664.

This excellent review of medication safety issues in cardiovascular and stroke patients, as the title implies, is focused on acute or hospital-based management; but much of the information is applicable to outpatient management as well. Of course, a good deal of the discussion focuses on anticoagulants, antiplatelet agents, and thrombolytics as well as measures that have been recommended to reduce medication errors and complications in order to improve patient outcomes.

Publication Details:

Medication Errors in Acute Cardiovascular and Stroke Patients. A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association
Andrew D. Michaels, Sarah A. Spinler, Barbara Leeper, E. Magnus Ohman, Karen P Alexander, L. Kristin Newby, Hakan Ay, W. Brian Gibler, on behalf of the American Heart Association Acute Cardiac Care Committee of the Council on Clinical Cardiology, Council on Quality of Care and Outcomes Research, Council on Cardiopulmonary, Critical Care, Perioperative, and Resuscitation, Council on Cardiovascular Nursing and Stroke Council
