Exercise Recommended Following a Stroke
Henry I. Bussey, Pharm.D.
May 2004
The American Heart Association has just published (in Circulation, April 27, 2004 and the May issue of Stroke) an extensive position statement on the value of physical exercise in patients who have experienced a stroke. Specifically, the article reviews the current statistics on functional capacity of stroke survivors, the benefits of exercise, the importance of a pre-exercise evaluation, a discussion of the merits of different types of exercises, and in general recommends a tailored exercise program of 20 to 60 minutes of exercise daily for 3 to 7 days of the week.
