Unfractionated Heparin May Counteract Aspirin's Effect in Carotid Endarterectomy

Review: Webster SE, Payne DA, Jones CI, Hayes PD, Bell PR, Goodall AH, Naylor AR. Anti-platelet effect of aspirin is substantially reduced after administration of heparin during carotid endarterectomy. J Vasc Surg. 2004 Sep;40(3):463-8.

Investigators in the United Kingdom report that the administration of unfractionated heparin during carotid endarterectomy is associated with a reversal of the antiplatelet effects of aspirin 150 mg daily. Whether similar reversal of aspirin's antiplatelet effect occurs with low molecular weight heparins, and perhaps other antithrombotic agents, remains to be determined.
